About me

I have been known to describe myself as a ...
sometime geologist, programmer, analyst, system designer, geek, naturalist (not naturist), writer, data magpie, pedant, and occasionally a wood-turner.
All more or less accurate.

I'm based in Sheffield (in South Yorkshire, in the UK) and through volunteering at the local museum I have had a good excuse for digressing into many subjects, ranging from meteorology to Spitfire engines, via primeval swamps and silver soup tureens (don't ask, its a long story).

This blog covers bits of my various digressions, starting with the Natural History of the area around Sheffield - probably including some meteorology and a bit of the topography, and who knows what else!

Other web-sites (covering my other interests and side-lines) are (or were) ...
My old web-site www.middlea.freeserve.co.uk, covering Family History, old essays, and software has now 'gone' (July 2016) - EE stopped their support of Freeserve sites - which leaves ...
middlea.jimdo.com was to be my replacement site (though that also seemed to disappear for a while (!)). It was always a 'work in progress' that very occasionally got an update..  Its main purpose to date has been to hold a list of Publications, but I have now duplicated that as a page on this site, so the 'jimdo' site may disappear very soon.
datmapr.jimdo.com is a home for my FREE mapping software.  Quoting from the site ... "DatMapR is a Windows application which provides a flexible tool for creating maps from location record data in text and numeric format – such data includes biological records, land-use statistics, or simply a list of location references. The data can be provided in a variety of formats and the mapping can be based on a wide range of parameters defined by the user.  Oh, and its FREE!"
I'm also on Twitter at and , and on LinkedIn
